Are you looking for an inexpensive way to store and archive your data in the cloud? Well look no further because Amazon Glacier is here!
It is very cheap to upload data into Amazon Glacier. Prices start at just $0.01 per GB per month. Amazon stores the data encrypted for security purposes and provides durability of up to 99.99999999999%. Integrating Glacier with your other AWS product can also be done very nicely. AWS solutions, such as S3 (Simple Storage Service), EC2 (Elastic Cloud Compute), and EBS (Elastic Block Storage) fits and works very well with Glacier.
Amazon Glacier is ideal for storing data, which does not require immediate or frequent access (unlike that of S3). The retrieval times for data uploaded into Glacier can take anywhere from 3-5 hours depending on the size of the data. In addition, retrieval costs $0.12 per GB for the first 10 TB.
Organizations that would require the storing of long term data would find that they can save a significant amount of money utilizing Glacier. Physical storage infrastructures, such as servers or tape libraries, can be very expensive and a hassle to maintain overtime.
We have spoken to a few small businesses who are already utilizing Glacier for archival of photos and documents. It is starting to become a money saving trend that will progress for years to come.
